Volvo's hope for the future – small and efficient trepip – Aftonbladet

A Swedish motor for the most energy-efficient models.

Soon, Volvo brand new three-cylinder engines – with 180 horsepower.

– A very responsive, compact and powerful three-cylinder engine of premium quality, Volvo claims.

Volvo should be within the next few years to completely replace the current model range. First up is the new XC90 and soon after comes the important V90 wagon. But for success requires more than the world’s leading security and 450 horsepower – now confirms namely the manufacturer to the future Volvos will have turbocharged three-cylinder engines under the hoods.

Swedish Developed

The development of the motor takes place in Sweden and the will be built in Skövde next to the existing four-cylinder VEA engines that were introduced just over a year ago. Prototype Tests are already underway and the engine will be ready for series production within a few years.

The new engines will primarily take place in the next generation 60 Series (S60 / V60 / XC60) and 40-series also includes the new compact SUV XC40. And Volvo promises a lightweight and compact engine with class leading technology.

– We have learned a lot from the development behind our 4-cylinder Drive-E motors, and translated knowledge into a highly responsive, compact and powerful 3-cylinder engine of premium quality.

three-cylinder hybrid

Volvo believes that the gasoline-powered engine delivers up to 180 horsepower, but they also say that it is designed to support multiple applications. We interpret that in future we will see three-cylinder hybrid cars with similar technology in the new XC90 T8 Twin Engine.

– The beauty of the new three-cylinder engine that we develop is that it can be built on the same production lines as our 4-cylinder engine. This provides a flexible production potential that can be customized for our business needs As we grow. It is an important step forward for Volvo Cars. In terms of power and efficiency, Volvo’s engineering to be expressed clearly in the new 3-cylinder Drive-E engine, Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President of Research & amp; Development at Volvo Car Group.
