Mold Toxins in straw threat to the Swedish pig industry – Sveriges Radio

New research shows that straw may have high doses of mold toxins DON and ZEA, something that could be a threat to the Swedish pig industry. Now they want the State Veterinary Institute that farmers should take samples of their straw.

– The pigs do not grow. The halt in its growth, and after that it is difficult for the animals to reach slaughter weight. Then drop the farmer money, then it must feed the animals anymore. It costs large sums, says Per Häggblom at the National Veterinary Institute.

In the past, the focus was on there may be toxins in cereals, but new research shows that mold toxins can also put themselves in straw, which means that the pigs can ingest toxins from two different directions, which can cause feed refusal, pseudopregnancy and endocrine disorders.

The Pig Farmer Ronnie Samuelsson think he has a good grasp of the pigs straw. He has hundreds of sows, that can eat a full eight kilos per day. Therefore, visually inspect the straw and he works a lot prevention. But SVA want him and the other pig farmers in the country to carry out tests to know for sure.
– It is, in fact, with fairly simple sampling, to ascertain that both grain and straw is okay before giving the pigs there. This way you can save money, but also reduce unnecessary animal suffering, says Pär Häggblom.

Pig Farmer Ronnie Samuelsson embrace of the councils, but it is not easy for him to take samples of their straw.
– We make off with about 800 straw bales weighing 500 kilos each, and among all the bales, it is not easy to find a representative sample. Since it is also a kostad question, it costs about 1200 crowns, he said.
