The only candidate, former European Commissioner Stavros Dimas, received 168 votes in parliament, thus reaching short of the 180 needed.
Shortly after the announcement of the results of the vote were the Athens Stock Exchange plummeted by nearly 11 percent. Stock markets in Spain and Italy had also fallen by 2-3 percent. Meanwhile, government bond yields rose in these countries significantly.
Now waiting for new elections within weeks. Appropriate date is January 25 or February 1, according to Greek media.
