– For 2018, We have two all-electric cars on the market, says the German biljättens chief executive Rupert Stadler told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine (FAZ).
– For First, a sports car, second a SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle).
The latter is seen as an attempt to meet US Tesla, who already in 2015 launches SUV model X. But it can also be a direct rival to Volvo XC90.
FAZ emphasizes how pressured the German bilbjässarna is of Tesla, by comparing the last three years the stock market development for the American upstart and Volkswagen – the German company’s shares have risen 58 percent, while Tesla rushed up the whole 697 percent.
The comparison is lame so somewhat in that Tesla is a relatively new, and naturally fast-growing company, but nevertheless illustrates image problems established European manufacturers have when the United States leads development of electric cars and Japanese Honda and Toyota boasts of its similarly emission-free hydrogen cars.
VW, together with Mercedes-Benz and BMW still further forward than the Audi, in that they have already completely emission-free models in the range. But these dismisses Audi.
– Electric cars with 150 mile range (between charges) will have a limited success in the market. 400-450 kilometers is a must, says Stadler.
By this token, he the current models that BMW’s i3, VW’s electric Golf, Renault Zoe and the Nissan Leaf. But Tesla’s Model S has a stated range of 50 mil, and something similar is expected when the Model X is released during the 2015th
Volvo is becoming lonelier among the high-profile European brands to exclude electric models.
– Pure electric cars we do not believe, they have too many limitations, CEO Hakan Samuelsson told the Daily News.
Volvo has certainly had an electric models, the C30 Electric, but in very small edition. The upcoming flagship XC90′s purest variant becomes a hybrid.
