Both the industry and the environmental movement nuts disapproval by the EU in favor of the new rules on GM crops.
Tuesday’s decision is based on a compromise in December between Member States and European Parliament negotiators and was voted formally through with 480 parliamentary votes against 159th
The new rules give each Member State extended the right to stop a GM crop, although the centrally authorized at EU level.
“One stop signal for Innovation in Europe”, says industry association European Cinema in a disappointed statement, while environmentalists fear that the rules should open up to more states.
The majority of the EU Parliament was nonetheless pleased to finally have reached a decision after many years locked position.
– The compromise is to me regrettable – but the only one possible. I have never been able to defend the way that GMO technology is used today. It is solely for the benefit of the profits of the very large companies. But never forget that the technology itself is never good or bad – it depends on who is doing what, said the Swedish Honourable Marit Paulsen (FP) in the previous debate.
– We will be based on the precautionary principle. It is important not to rush forward on difficult issues or allow those that may have adverse effects on human health and the environment, said in turn colleague Jytte Guteland (S).
