It may be necessary for the Danish government to allow the issue of accession to the EU banking union to a referendum. It says Economy Minister Morten Østergaard.
Danish institutions and voters are split on the question whether the country should apply for membership of the banking union, according to a proposal put forward in November with the European Central Bank (ECB) as a regulator of the sector.
According to Østergaard, the government has not yet decided whether to recommend to Denmark to the EU and will launch a referendum should it become necessary.
– We will follow the rules of the Danish constitution, which means that we will need a (referendum) only if we give from us additional self-determination, he said.
The Danish central bank recommends that the country will join the banking union.
