Almost four out of five Swiss have said no to the introduction of a guaranteed, unconditional basic income for all citizens in today’s referendum, according to an opinion poll institute GFS commissioned by television -bolaget SRF.
This weekend’s vote is the culmination of a long period of debate in Switzerland to introduce a basic income of 2 500 Swiss francs, or about 21 000 per month, for all residents – gratuitous in form of work.
But the proposal has had public opinion against them. Before the vote, the initiative only the support of around a quarter of the residents.
