Stockholm.

The damage after forest fire in Västmanland can cost insurance companies millions of dollars.

Meanwhile, there are still questions about how the fire occurred.

When the fire broke out was the fire risk is classified as “extreme” and state Sveaskog had stopped its activities in the area.

– We took the decision to cease all land preparation, we went out and stopped, says Linda Andersson, CIO at Sveaskog. continued to work

But the forest owner Stora Enso, which had hired the contractor who is believed to have caused the fire, did not same assessment.

– The contractor has the responsibility to assess the fire risk in place and we have confidence in our contractors, says Ulrika Lilja, Head of Communications at Stora Enso.

TT: It sounds like you are trying to shift responsibility?

– It is important to remember that it is not clear what has happened and that no one suspected of a crime. We await investigation.

The emergence of fires associated with land preparation is not particularly unusual, says Niklas Fogdestam who is a researcher at the Forestry Research Institute.

– There are considerable risks when the soil is very dry and you run the machines with metal against the stone so that it sparks. But it is not possible to draw a general conclusion that it is wrong to ground preparation in a fire hazard classified area, he says.

The police told TT that has interrogated the machine operator and his boss, but will not tell me what conclusions you have been able to so far.

Hundreds of millions

In Länsförsäkringar, where the majority of those affected are customers, rolls injury reports now in a steady stream.
