– We have not bought Kockums to scale down, but to expand and develop the business, says Håkan Buskhe Sydsvenskan.
He made a brief visit on Tuesday in Malmo to greet staff and to unveil a new sign with defense group Saab logo on the façade of the old Kockums headquarters. Then he proceeded to Karlskrona and Muskö order to one day have time to visit all Kockums units.
At the end of June this year, it was clear that Saab wanted to buy Kockums submarine operations of German TKMS 340 million. The deal was definitely locked on 22 July.
But even earlier in the summer, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) submarine orders with Saab at nearly 0.5 billion, and a statement of intent for the future Swedish defense submarine equivalent 11.2 billion crowns.
– Based on the orders and frames we received, I expect that it will generate several hundred new jobs. We do not want to be second best in the class but also to develop the business and become a world leader, says Buskhe.
He believes that an investment in the export of submarine technology is necessary to meet the development costs on a future submarine technology.
– Saab Kockums is too big for Sweden. We will show the taxpayers that we are internationally competitive. 75 percent of Saab’s orders go abroad. Over time, this shall also apply to Kockums majority says Buskhe.
A few years ago, discussions were held about moving development in Malmö to Karlskrona, where the shipyard is located.
But Hakan Bushke gives clearly indicate that such a scenario is impossible.
– In all cases, as long as I’m president. Malmö is a great place for business. We employ globally unique engineers, creative professionals who need to think again. It requires a functioning social structure. It offers no more effective if people have to think about where they will work, says Buskhe.
There was cheer faces among the staff when on Tuesday met with the new owners.
– The This feels great. After all the uncertainty we finally know that we are going somewhere and with Saab’s entire knowledge, we are the knowledge base to make better submarines and we also have access to their market, says Ms Steen-Granholm, steward for engineering bay at Kockums.
When Saab spring recruited staff in a steady stream from the former Kockums ended up new employees in temporary premises in the Sigma house in West Harbour.
– Now they are on their way back to their old office locations , which feels good. But we recruits to the extent predicted, there is not room for everyone in our old headquarters. Then we start looking for brand new facilities, says Ingrid Holmberg, President of the Union at Kockums.
The name of the new business unit focused on submarine technology, Saab Kockums. The submarine production will mainly take place at the shipyard in Karlskrona. Buskhe has expansion plans there too.
– We bought the yard, but we can see a business case, it is not impossible to even build a new and more efficient shipyard where, he says.
