Employees of the municipal company Kalmar Water is forced to train – to get higher pay.
The company requests the attendance lists from gyms to verify that the staff are really there.
– If any systematic do not practice, we can keep the salary of the person, says Linn Sjogren, HR manager at the company.
Kalmar Water has had mandatory wellness since 2007. Twice a week, an hour each time, they need 80 employees work out. They may choose to do so during working hours or in the evening, they choose the latter, they are paid by the hour.
– In the beginning there were some doubts from people. Some were upset and thought it was absolutely unbelievable that they would have to work out during working hours – and under duress, says Linn Sjögren.
Viewing presence in gyms
Siv Jidflo, 62 years; administrative assistant at the company, has been with the late wellness program was introduced. She says that nowadays the majority think that the exercise is good, though there are still employees who stand against it.
– There are always people who do not like to train, and then it is not so popular. But it is within our capacity to plan that it is obligatory and it is checked after all up, she says.

– I do spot checks and request excerpts from the gyms where I see how many times the staff have pulled their gym membership. Are there any who are careless as we talk with that person and trying to find a reason why training fails, says Linn Sjögren.

– Yes, I understand that many think it is strange. Meanwhile, we have a responsibility towards our employees and we want them to stay healthy – even for retirement. It’s our biggest goal, says Linn Sjögren.
