Reports of suspected insider offenses rose to a new peak last year – while both prosecutions and convictions became fewer. It shows statistics SvD Business has requested from the Swedish National Economic Crimes Bureau (EBM).

Last year 168 notifications of suspected insider offenses, compared to 157 the year before. But only six complaints led to prosecutions, all of whom were convictions. 2014 was awakened in comparison twelve charges, ten of which led to a conviction.

Albon Rännar, director of market intelligence at the Shareholders’ Association, believes that so few convictions could affect confidence in the stock market.

It’s very serious. It is hugely important for the stock market to abuse checked, he told SvD Business.

notifications increases may have several explanations, says Gunilla Sandblom, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of EBM. She also emphasizes that the prosecutor has a heavy burden of proof.

This is a crime that is difficult to prove, she tells the magazine.
