Satellites can be Esrange future – Sydsvenskan

– The digitization affects all sectors of society. Most of it will be connected in the future. Many private companies want to be able to communicate in a new way, says Minister Mikael Damberg (S).

It opens new business models, where not only the producing something can make money but also the one who handles the flow of information, he said.

Space investigation that the government received last fall pointed to the possibility. Now Jan Nygren, a former Social Democratic minister who also worked for the defense group Saab been commissioned to assess the commercial approach in satellite launches from Esrange. He has until October to himself.

– Sweden is a strong space nation, something that unfortunately is not so well known. There is access to a lot of expertise, research and education in Kiruna, says Helene Hellmark Knutsson (S) Minister of Higher Education and Research.

It is thus in the first place the commercial part to be evaluated, but Helene Hellmark Knutsson also sees opportunities for increased research.

the ministers pointed out that the environment around the Esrange is unique, not only in a Swedish perspective, but also internationally. There are not many places depopulated, suitable for launching satellites.

– There should be a potential to develop this, says Mikael Damberg.
