Malmstrom are in place in the United States to, among other things, meet Trade Minister Michael Froman and everything from senators to trade unions and political scientists. Discussion subject is TTIP – the gigantic free trade agreements that the EU and the US are negotiating ago in 2013.
– We have ambitions to make clear that at the end of the year, but it depends very much on which to maneuver the Americans have to finalize the in an election campaign where perhaps trade issues are increasingly infected, says Malmstrom on the phone from Washington.
Only the last few weeks , world trade has jumped into seriously in the election campaign. Republican Donald Trump has spoken of how “America is run over” while Bernie Sanders of Democrats clearly accused the major trade agreement to have cost millions of jobs. The competitor Hillary Clinton in turn has already issued criticism towards the Pacific States’ new agreements, the TPP.
– Just TTIP has never been mentioned, but it is both the (North American) Nafta and TPP, and so on and it shows you that trade policy has become an issue for electoral debate, says Malmstrom – who has a personal favorite in the fight.
– Yes, but I think that I keep to myself. The Commission has no official candidate, but we must deal with situation, whoever wins, Malmström says.
