British Barclays announced unexpectedly on Wednesday that the bank’s chief executive Antony Jenkins leaves. Until further notice, the Board Chairman John McFarlane take over as executive chairman, while searching for a successor to Jenkins.
The decision was taken by the board led by deputy chairman Sir Michael Rake. The Bank’s strategy is not changed because of the decision but there was a need for new leadership, it is clear from a press release.

– I reflected a long time on the question of leadership and discussed this with all the directors. Despite Antony’s performance it became clear to us that the new skills required for the time ahead of us, says Rake in a statement.
Jenkins took over as chief executive of Barclays in the summer of 2012.
– The Board recognizes that Antony Jenkins contributed as CEO during the past three years in extremely difficult conditions for the Group and are extremely grateful to him for having brought the company to a much stronger position, writes the bank in a press release.
