Most important moment in EU history “- Aftonbladet

On Sunday, meet leaders of all EU member states to take a crucial decision on the Greek crisis.

Last Thursday, the Greek Government to come up with suggestions for reforms.

– This is undoubtedly the most important moment in the EU and the euro’s history, said European Council President Donald Tusk.

During Tuesday the summits succeeded one another in Brussels. First hit eurozone finance ministers. Then held an extraordinary emergency meeting with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the top leaders of the EU and euro zone. The result? A crucial meeting on Sunday with the leaders of the EU’s 28 member countries. European Council President Donald Tusk did not mince the words when he described the seriousness of the situation.



EU chief: “Grexit possible”

– It is absolutely justified that all 28 EU leaders, at the meeting on Sunday, because I think this is without doubt the most important moment in the EU and the euro’s history, said Tusk.

Greece got a very clear deadline by Donald Tusk. They must submit a proposal on the reform at the latest on Thursday otherwise be the worst happen.

– If we do not find a solution waiting in the worst case a state bankruptcy for Greece and the Greek banking system is dissolved. It is something that will certainly be most painful for the Greek people, said Tusk.

European Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker said the EU has prepared a scenario where “Grexit” happens – then that Greece leaves the euro.

– I am totally against Grexit, but I can not prevent it if the Greek government does not do what they are asked to do, said Juncker.

Greece did not bid

On Tuesday’s first meeting with finance ministers, many thought that Greece would present a new proposal for including raising the retirement age and cuts in the Greek public sector, in exchange for financial support. The previous bid led to conflict between the EU and Greece and by extension to the referendum on Sunday.

Instead shocked Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, do not bring any bid to the meeting on Sunday afternoon.

– Previously, I have avoided talking about deadlines and time limits. But tonight I must be very clear – the deadline expires this week, said Tusk in strong terms at the press conference.

Earlier in the day, US President Barack Obama held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as well as with Alexis Tsipras, to discuss the situation. According to a statement from the White House wants the US to all the sides are working to find a solution which means that Greece remains in the euro zone.



Tsipras wants to resolve the crisis

The leader that everyone’s eyes are on Now – Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, also spoke on Sunday evening to find a definitive solution to the crisis.

– There was a positive discussion. The process will go fast and the aim is to find a solution by the end of the week, he told the media after the summit.

He stressed that the Greek people “no” was a weapon in the negotiations.

– The Greek side will continue striving, with the help of the powerful weapon that the Greek people’s vote has given us. The majority have shown that they want us to find a solution that puts an end to the discussion about “Grexit” and opens up to finally leave this crisis, said Tsipras.
