the government has decided to give CSN (CSN) mandated to propose further measures to recover study loans from the foreign resident borrowers .

today, Sweden has one of the world’s most generous system of student loans. But for the system to be able to continue in the future, build it according to the Government on today’s debts be repaid to a greater extent.

Big difference between borrowers
Borrowers living abroad refund their study loans to a much lesser extent than those resident in Sweden. Of the total amount in 2015 was charged borrowers living abroad were paid 70.3 percent in the year of payment. The corresponding percentage for borrowers resident in Sweden was 93.6 percent.

– It is unacceptable that people are using our generous student aid system, by failing to take responsibility and pay back their debts. To enable a developed study support system it is important to reverse the trend so that the repayment rate increases, says Helene Hellmark Knutsson, Minister of Higher Education and Research.

The refund must increase
in 2015, the number of foreign-resident borrowers to approximately 65 400 people, about four percent of the borrowers. The total debt for student loans is 208 billion, including debt for borrowers living abroad amounted to 14.6 billion.

The Government considers that the repayment of debt must increase and therefore today the CSN instructed to conduct a mapping of liabilities and an analysis of the reason behind the outstanding debts. But also to come up with proposals for concrete measures to repayments will increase.
