The grain harvest is expected to decline – Västerbotten Courier

This year’s grain harvest will be 10 percent lower than last year’s harvest, but 4 percent higher than the average for the past five years, according to a forecast by the Agriculture Department.

Compared to last year’s winter wheat, which accounts for almost half of the total harvest, which is the crop that decreases the most. Less cultivated area and less yield per hectare affect.

The harvest of oilseeds, such as canola and turnip rape, is expected to fall 22 per cent against the previous year to 280 000 tonnes. There is a decline of 12 percent compared to the five-year average.

“It is mainly the smaller yields per hectare of all cereal crops, which leads to a smaller total harvest,” the Agriculture Department in a press release.

The harvests per hectares of triticale and mixed grain is expected to simultaneously increase by 7 percent and 5 percent compared to the five-year average. For corn, it looks to be a decline of 4 percent.

The total grain harvest in 2016 is estimated at 5.6 million tonnes.
