Renzi chose Ventotene for its symbolic value as the island is considered to be the place where the dream of a united Europe was born.

Altiero Spinelli and Ernesto Rossi wrote in secret the so-called Ventotenemanifestet when they were detained on the island during World war II.

Spinelli and Rossi had been imprisoned for criticism of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and fascism and nationalism.
