Lamb Lack provides great import – ATL

The Swedish production of lambs have not kept up with the pace of Swedish lamb has increased in popularity. Consumption has risen by 50 percent in ten years. During the same period production only increased by 25 percent, according to DN. Yet, sheep and lambs greatly increased in number. In ten years, the number increased from 470,000 to 594,000 sheep and lambs in 2014, according to figures from the Agriculture Department.

– We need more Swedish raw material. I started working with this twenty years ago, which was half of the lamb Swedish. It would be fun to come up at that level again, says Elisabeth Svensson, head of lamb on butcher association HK Scan, DN.

Large imports

According to Tomas Olsson, President of the Swedish lamb producers , it is difficult to get hold of fresh lamb reared in Sweden. Seven out of ten lambs sold are imported. The Swedish lamb producers have relatively small crews; the average is 32 sheep on a farm.

– In New Zealand, can the farmers have around 20,000 ewes, says Tomas Olsson at DN’s interview.

Swedish added value

Tomas Olsson highlights three areas where improvements are needed for it to become more Swedish-produced lamb.

– We need to bring order to the predator policy so that fårägarna can feel safe. We must become good at rearing the lamb and we need to get consumers to pay for Swedish added value that good animal husbandry and low use of antibiotics, says Tomas Olsson.
