The traffic can be jerky, noisier and – worst of all – faster.
First, slow down for the obstacle, then gas. And then slow again.
It is in spurt between the bumps that accesses easily become too high and the good idea of the barriers may be a blow.
National Road and Transport Research Institute, VTI have looked into the impact of obstacles, which are available in variety on Swedish roads. Solid humps that punishes the driver so that it feels in the back if you are driving too fast.
The problem is that motorists sometimes forced down at speeds well below the posted level, even in the 30 roads, and then responds by accelerating even to illegal speeds, says VTI.
There are alternatives, active dynamic speed bump that protects the buses and other heavy vehicles but slows the rest of the traffic. Or that measures the speed and popping up out of the street when the speed limit is exceeded.
One example is falluckemodellen where speeders are greeted by a four-centimeter high edge of the roadway. The point is to create smooth flow, even at higher speeds.
– It would be possible with speed bumps that allow 70 and 80 kilometers per hour; said Omar Bagdadi, a researcher at VTI.
When required radar or anything that can read in advance what kind of vehicles coming and how fast it runs. No need to slow down unnecessarily and disrupt the rhythm.
