Preparations already started before the upcoming e-commerce rush. In 2013 it increased Swedish Christmas shopping online greatly, and contributed to the e-commerce sales rose 18 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the e-barometer which was conducted by Post North, Swedish Digital Trade and HUI Research.
– We estimate that we will set new record highs this year. A rough figure is that we need 3,000 temporary staff for Christmas. In addition, another 50 agents are opened to increase accessibility, says Mats Ståhlgren, head of distribution at Post Nord Sweden.
There are still no exact predictions for e-commerce for the coming Christmas, but Jonas Ogvall, CEO of Swedish Digital Trade, believes in a significant increase this year.
– I think we will be close to a 25 percent increase in e-commerce over Christmas, he says. It also has to do with Christmas this year falls on a Wednesday, which facilitates the delivery.
Although the German-owned logistics and transportation company DHL confirms that it will employ additional staff in Sweden over Christmas to cope with e-commerce. How many are still unclear.
– Christmas is our most intensive period volume. Unfortunately, I have no figures on how it is expected to be this Christmas, but the service point, which is our e-commerce services, are expected to increase their traffic by 20 to 30 percent, says Emmelie Johansson, Marketing and Communication Manager at DHL Freight.
Even sector colleague Schenker is planning an increase in the workforce during the period. Around 100 people extra to be recorded, which is an increase of staff by around 12 percent.
