G7 will discuss “Russian aggression” during the summit in the German Alps – Swedish YLE

The leading industrial countries summit, the G7 meeting, has begun in Castle Elmau close to Garmisch-Partenkrichen in southern Germany.

US President Barack Obama says it will bring up the “Russian aggression in Ukraine” during the meeting.

The hostess of the meeting, Chancellor Angela Merkel said before the meeting that it is largely Moscow’s decision that determines how long the sanctions will remain in effect. G7 will later present a joint declaration on the situation in Ukraine.

The leaders 7 countries will also discuss the threat from extremists and climate change, noted Obama before the two-day meeting.

– During the following two days in Schloss Elmau we will discuss our common future, the world economy that creates jobs, new trade cooperation across the Atlantic, how to stand up to Russian aggression in Ukraine and the fight against extremism and climate change, Obama said after his arrival.

On the spot are also the leaders of France, Italy, Japan, Canada and the UK, while Russian President Vladimir Putin was not invited because of the annexation of the Crimea and the conflict in Ukraine.

The meeting is also expected to address border disputes between China and other countries in the Southeast Asia as well as Greece’s debt problems.

Before the meeting officially began this afternoon discussed Merkel and Obama German-American relations during a lunch and a Sunday stroll in the nearby village of Krün.
