Costs for hired nurses increases – Swedish Radio

The cost of hiring nurses from temporary employment agencies are rising sharply in almost all the country’s counties and regions.

Since several years back, the county councils and regions, high costs of hiring doctors and now they risk locking themselves into a dependence on hiring even nurses. Last year, nearly doubled the cost of the hired nurses to half a billion

Dalarna County Council expenses for hired nurses, according to the summary, increased by 78 percent during the period January to April compared with last year’s first four months.

From 2013, the cost of Dalarna increased from close to 5 million to 17 million.

There are two obvious explanations for the trend: the One is that the need for nurses increased in Sweden. The second is that staffing companies attracted over nurses with offers of higher salaries and greater opportunities to decide over their working hours.

Agneta Jöhnk, in charge of labor relations in Sweden’s municipalities and county councils, points out that the cost of hiring nurses is still small in relation to the county councils’ total payroll, but she is concerned about the development.

– On the whole, that the rental increase is not good, the risk is that the working environment is bad for the people working there and patient safety deteriorates, says Jöhnk.
