Style index from the Swedish Trade show that sales of clothing from specialist retailers, measured in comparable units and in current prices, fell by 9.2 percent in May compared with the same month last year.

The corresponding results for the sales in shoe stores show a decline of 8.5 percent.

“May was a really lousy month for the fashion trade. Not Since April 2012, the clothing retail trade showed a worse month than -9.2 percent. Even skohandelns -8.4 percent is really bad, “says Mikael Sandström, branch chairman of the Swedish Trade Style.

” May was a bit of the perfect storm and I am thinking not only on the windy, rainy and cold weather, which obviously lowered the köphumöret. The calendar effect was also great at around four percent. This, together with a strong comparative month (plus 3-4 per cent) made the downturn became so great, “he continues.

” June’s sales trends are difficult to predict. The calendar effect is also this month negative with just two normal open Saturdays against three last year. Meanwhile, there is a pent-up need summer clothes, if only someone spurs the summer “, says Mikael Sandström.

So far this year, sales of clothing declined by 1.4 percent, while footwear sales have fallen by 1.9 percent.
