The Italian State are buyers for the steel plant, which is the largest in Europe and has 14,000 employees. The owners, Riva Group, was deprived in 2013 the daily check after being accused of not having acted sufficiently to stop the massive emissions from the plant. A lawsuit is pending since October where the Ilva steel plant is believed to have contributed to at least 400 deaths.
The European Commission is concerned, however, over the Italian state’s pledge of financial support to prospective buyers in order to “facilitate the transitional phase”.
“The best guarantee of a sustainable continuation of steel production in the Taranto region is of Ilva’s assets are sold to a buyer who upgrade them in accordance with the environmental requirements,” said EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager in a statement on Wednesday.
