– They applied for membership in 1987. If the development of the country continues as now they will probably come up with some Sometime around the year 3000, said David Cameron to ITV on Sunday.

the negotiations on EU membership began in 2005 but has been tough, not least because of Turkey’s poor record on human rights.

Cameron’s statement will be the same day as Binali Yildrim will become the new leader of the ruling party AKP and hence also Turkey’s next prime minister after resigning Ahmet Davutoglu.

on Sunday’s extraordinary congress, where he was the only candidate for the presidency, said Yildrim that one of the most important issues for him will be to change the country’s constitution so that the president, in the current state of his close ally Erdogan, get even more power.

Prime Minister gambit is linked to the ongoing Brexit debate the referendum takes place exactly one month. The opposition Leavenworth Campaign, which advocates Britain’s withdrawal from the EU, has tried to discourage continued membership with the argument that the EU will let Turkey and contribute to a new wave of refugees in the country.

Cameron’s own defense minister and advocate for Leavenworth campaign Penny Mordaunt, claims that Britain is powerless in the EU because they do not have the right of veto and can not reject Turkey’s membership.

But Cameron is to sharp counterattack, calling Mordaunts statement a lie in a British television interview.

– She’s completely wrong. Leavenworth campaign has done a very misleading statement. UK and all other EU countries have veto power and can decide if another country’s membership. It’s a fact. This leads to a strong questioning of their judgment, says the Prime Minister.
