Debris Potatoes were gourmet – Farming

Anna Wilén grow strawberries, potatoes and vegetables on the farm where Söre in Värmland. She is nominated for his product gourmet potatoes, which she seized the small potatoes that were previously only used as animal feed, or discarded.

Shaky all day

– It’s huge to be nominated. It’s all over and I was trembling all day when I received the news, she says.

The idea to do one of the small, flavorful potatoes was born in the early 2000s.

– It was about improving the economy of the farm, but also on the environment. To do something of that which was considered as junk but tasted delicious. We do many good products in agriculture, but we may be better able to process and sell them, she says.

Anna Wilén have put a lot of time on developing potato handling on the farm, produce packaging, samples cook the potatoes, find recipes, contact the stores and launching the product.

Important dare

– It takes much more time than you think. But one should dare. This has been a fun trip and it has meant a lot for my business.

2003 came gourmet potatoes in stores. Then lyxpotatis with recipes on the package news, today it is a matter of course.

– then took the potato is not so much space in the stores, while chip shelves spread out. It was one of my goals, to take back the space and showcase Swedish-produced potatoes.

To help, she has had from family, friends, cook students and staff from the Agricultural Society.

My idea

– Gourmet potatoes were my idea, but it has claimed many people’s commitment to becoming a reality. It had never gone without my ex-husband Gunnar Wilén, my mother, my three sons and my co-workers on the farm. That’s my main advice to other innovators. One should take the advice of others and dare to talk about their idea. Gourmet potato has made me a better entrepreneurs, it has provided more people work and I have got lots of contacts, says Anna Wilén.

Copas innovation prize will be awarded in autumn 2016 at an international ceremony.
