defense company Saab has received an order of SEK 1.5 billion from state FMV. FMV manages purchases of materiel to the Swedish defense and has now ordered a new lightweight torpedo to the Swedish Navy.
The new torpedo can be used from submarines, surface ships and helicopter. Above all it should be used for anti-submarine warfare and the hope is of course that it will improve a Swedish capability weakened substantially since the more famous submarine hunts in the early 1980s.
– This means that a project that has been strongly delayed successively finally looks to be rid of. It is very gratifying that the order is finally placed and that we get a replacement for the torpedo 45, says Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist (S).
Though it will take some time before the new torpedo is in place. Work on the development of the torpedo begins in the first year and sometime around 2022-2023 is expected to torpedo the system around so be ready for the Swedish navy can put it to use in earnest.
There will also be a limited introduction. According to the agreement that is now written, the new lightweight torpedo system to be introduced on two of the current submarines in Gotland Class. They are now being rebuilt and modernized at Saab Kockums Shipyard in Karlskrona.
The torpedo will also be introduced in the Navy’s Visby class corvettes. However, it is highly uncertain whether the torpedo will also be introduced on the two new submarines of the model A26 Saab Kockums recently started building in Karlskrona.
There’s not no decision on it new lightweight torpedo system to be introduced in the highly delayed Helicopter 14. the helicopter comes in two versions, a variant of the army’s needs and one that is supposed lake which among other things should be used for anti-submarine warfare. But even though it is supposed right anti-submarine warfare, it is not certain that the helicopter get the new lightweight torpedo system.
– There is no money for it in defense decisions and I do not see that there will be no immediate decision on the thing either, said Peter Hultqvist.
He is in any case very pleased with the appointment of the new lightweight torpedo finally happens.

New Torpedo 47 may include achieving longer than 20 kilometers, go deeper than the current Torpedo 45. the maximum speed is over 35 knots.
