Church deselect climate villains – Vasterbotten Courier

One of the world’s wealthiest religious institutions, the Church of England, to sell the investments in the coal and tar sands. The reason is concern over climate change.

– The Church has a moral responsibility to speak and act in terms of both environmental protection and justice for the world’s poor who are most vulnerable to climate change, said Richard Burridge from Church Council for ethical investment.

The church plans to sell shares for 12 million pounds (about 154 million) in the company extracts coal and oil from tar sands, two of the fossil fuels that produce the most greenhouse gases . The church will not in the future to invest in companies that receive more than ten percent of their income from the two sources of energy.
