Samsung applies for a patent for a biometric system to be able to read the veins structure.

Samsung applies for a patent for a biometric system where portable technology, such as a smart watch, can authenticate the user by reading the veins structure. It writes SamMobile.

According to the patent, a camera sensor and two light sources to scan an area at the back of the hand and thus capture the structure of the blood vessels. To determine the identity, a picture is taken and compared with the information stored in the device, in a similar way as when a fingerprint is read in many smartphones today.

The technology, in addition to unlock the device can also be used to give the user access to a hotel room or car. Another possibility is secure payments via a smart watch. If and when Samsung releases any product with the technology remains to be seen.

Samsung’s patent was filed in July 2015 and published in the Patent Office on February 4 this year.

Previously, Canadian Nymi presented a bracelet that detects the user’s unique rhythm, which can be used as the authentication method, replacing passwords. Just as fingerprints are human heartbeat unique and can thus be used for authentication at the payments, log on to the network, or physical access to a building.

Nymi began a year ago, a pilot project with MasterCard and the Royal Bank of Canada.
