Free-for tonnage tax – Västerbotten Courier

In Sweden pays shipping companies conventional corporation tax on profits like any other business. A tonnage tax means that shipping companies ‘income is determined at a flat rate based on ships’ tonnage volume, then the cargo and passenger capacity.

The tonnage is deemed to be a measure of shipping capacity and thus earning capacity. The system means that the shipping company pays taxes on its actual tonnage, irrespective of the actual profits and losses of the business.

When the tonnage tax introduced in Sweden, it will be voluntary for shipping companies to switch to tonnage tax in place of the conventional corporation.
