Swedish Mercedesbossen select the CES in Las Vegas – Today’s Industry

LAS VEGAS. Mercedes ‘ new research and development manager, the 47-year-old swede Ola Källenius ,select teknikmässan CES 2017 in Las Vegas to present themselves on the global stage instead of the next week’s annual car fair in Detroit.

"It is amazing what a development it has been for the automotive industry here at CES. A few years ago when we started coming here raised many eyebrows and wondered what the car companies do this on a teknikmässa. Today use many of our cars to showcase their technology," describes Ola Källenius change.

He was appointed as the new head of R & d for Mercedes-Benz during the previous year but took up her new post at the end of the year. Previously Ola Källenius, which is predicted to become the company’s new ceo within a few years, worked both as a marketing and sales manager.

And the entire automotive industry is undergoing according to him, a fundamental change in several areas.

"I believe our industry will change more in the next five to ten years than what at has done for the past 50 years," notes Ola Källenius, in an interview with the Di in Las Vegas.

four the main topics that he highlights where there is an ongoing revolution right now thanks to technology, is that we, and our cars may be continually connected, the development of self-driven segment, the shared services and the electrification of the car fleet.

Even if Ola Källenius is not älde than 47 years, he is a seasoned veteran in the Mercedes Benz. Immediately after the Stockholm school of Economics, he started working as an apprentice at the German automobile company, which he remained true throughout his career professionals. To an economist and not an engineer is head of development at Mercedes is also likely to be a sign of the times.

the Word on everyone’s lips at the teknikmässan in Las Vegas is the self-driven cars. In order to get all the way to the self-driven cars, there are three main factors that a car company needs to master, according to Ola Källenius.

"first, it is the sensors where we need many different varieties, such as radar and cameras. Here we have many established players who are coming up, and here we have decided to choose the partner that has the best technology of the moment", says Ola Källenius.

The other part that must be developed much is höguppdaterade three-dimensional maps. To reach here bought Mercedes kartföretaget Here from Nokia, together with its German competitors Audi and BMW in 2015 for closer to 25 billion.

"If you are going to reach the level four and five with self-driven cars, this is an absolutely crucial issue," says Ola Källenius.

the Sensors, and this mapping system surrounding the brain or the system that leads to the self-driven cars, namely the algorithms. Choose Mercedesz-Ben neither to cooperation with the other or to buy a company, but in this area is developing everything in-house.

"We believe that the self-driven cars are so important in the next 5-10 years that this is a technology that we need to be able to themselves. Today we have over 500 people working with this," says Ola Källenius.

The new technology will likely lead to several techniques and models of cars than what would danger the case in the normal case, which is probably not always going to be profitable in the short term.

"But do not jump on this train which now runs in several areas, would be the most risky. If you miss this, you can be all gone from the industry a few years", says Ola Källenius.
