Sweden bad at catching up disadvantaged children – Sveriges Radio

The study by UNICEF shows how far the most deprived allowed to fall behind other citizens, in terms of economy, health and education.

Our neighboring countries , Denmark, Finland and Norway are at the top, while Sweden is far down the list.

– There are disturbing and remarkable that Sweden does not pass of raising children who are the most needy, economic and social vulnerability, says Christina Heilborn, program director of UNICEF in Sweden.

UNICEF has compared a number of EU and OECD countries to see how much the conditions for children are different in each country. It has looked at the gaps among children in terms of economy, health, education and welfare.

A special focus is on the tenth of the children who are worst in society, and how far they have been allowed to lag behind the average.

In the peak of the list is Denmark, and tied for second place are Finland, Norway and Switzerland.

Sweden ranks first on the scene 23 of 35, then the lower half of the list. Before Sweden on the list are countries in the Baltics and Eastern Europe, Greece and the United States.

– It is surprising that more efforts have been made to capture the children living in economic and social vulnerability, and that particular this tenth that has the most needy. Not to make decisions that have been able to reach these kids, it’s a choice that has been made, says Christina Heilborn of UNICEF Sweden.

One reason that Sweden is worse than neighbors can be a relatively high immigration, but it is not sufficient as an explanation according to UNICEF.

the UN children’s fund calls for political decisions that can make it better for vulnerable children, such as more financial support, more cooperation between schools and social services.

Children of lone and immigrants are overrepresented among those who find it hardest, and do not break the pattern gets the far reaching consequences for the affected children, says Christina Heilborn.

– What we see now is that the child who is struggling financially also suffer from ill health and school failure. This means that the risk of social exclusion continue.
