This means, among other things Sveciaost, Uppland Kubb and brown beans from Öland, which is the origin protected in the EU, lack of list, covering a total of 223 foods. The EU’s own rules is over a thousand foods origin protection.

EU rules means that Swedish vodka must be manufactured in just Sweden and Kalix bleak roe must be produced in the area between Åby and Tornio River.

Origin protection for food are among the trickier during negotiations. The reason is that the United States primarily uses the trademark protection, while several of the names that the EU wants to have a monopoly on already used by American producers, writes ATL.

For manufacturers in the EU it’s about big money. Products with protected names account for 30 percent of EU food exports to the United States.
