New court dispute into Canada agreement – Swedish Dagbladet

The new dispute proceedings permanently posted and with the prior-appointed judge, to replace the current arbitration system (ISDS), which received heavy criticism during the recent negotiations with the US on the so-called TTIP agreement.

When it new system is now written into the already fully negotiated the Free Trade Agreement with Canada – Ceta – the European Commission has a clear hope of even getting into the same thing in the TTIP.

– this is obviously good news. . . This is a good sign that we can work together and we have listened to the concerns that existed, said EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström at a press conference in Brussels.

Enterprise and Mikael Damberg (S) call Ceta the agreement “very important for Sweden”.

– Canada is the world’s tenth largest economy in terms of GDP. They have a new government that has decided to make multi-billion dollar investments in infrastructure, sustainable energy and environmental initiatives. It fits perfectly against what Sweden is really good at, he said.

During the TTIP negotiations have critics, especially from the left, argued that the ISDS system gives large companies a great opportunity to stop the democratic decisions. The European Commission hopes that the new system’s tighter rules on what may be to dispute the court will alleviate criticism.

– It is clearly stated in the text that all countries have the right to legislate to protect its citizens, says Malmström.

Even Mikael Damberg believe that the settlement of negotiations with Canada to resolve the knots around the TTIP agreement.

– this is Europe’s idea of how to proceed with the investment protection of international agreement. Now it turns black and white that it is possible to sign such agreements with Canada and it should make the discussion easier in the US, he says.

Ceta Agreement should now be addressed by the EU’s member states and the EU Parliament. A final green light is expected at the earliest in the fall.
