New York's countermove when the taxi drivers skip to Uber – Business Week

Hundreds of used cars in New York City turned into now characteristic yellow taxis. In New York City is an ongoing emigration of taxi drivers who choose to instead work for the challenger Uber, writes the Financial Times.

In an attempt to lure back the driver, the city has now embarked on a project where 400 used cars to be spray painted yellow and provided with cutting down and gauges – a process known as “hacking up”.

Then launch in 2012 has Uber recruited around 15 000 drivers, which has resulted in a sharp fall in the number of yellow cabs in New York. According to the Committee for Taxi Safety, some owners just left a fifth of their cars. According to the chairman, David Beier, many drivers found it difficult to make as much money as they had hoped, and would like to return to running yellow taxis.

Uber welcome this project with open arms. The company says that everything that opens up more opportunities for drivers, who Uber app did three years ago, is good for both customers and cities.
