Beware of cheap jewelry – Västerbotten Courier

Beware of cheap jewelry – Västerbotten Courier

A large Swedish examination of expensive jewelry show that they may contain lead, cadmium and nickel allergies. The jewelery is not considered dangerous to wear, but children should not play with the jewelry or suck on them.

The Swedish Chemicals Agency (Chemistry) and approximately 100 municipalities audited and verified in the last year 1162 imitation jewelry from around 500 stores and 100 importers and manufacturers. The most common deficiencies were high levels of lead, cadmium or nickel. Some jewelry also contained mercury.

Chemistry also advises not to throw the jewelry in the household rubbish, but leave them to the local recycling center to prevent hazardous substances from entering the environment.

The inspections show that companies need to be better at finding out what the jewelry contains and also make demands on suppliers.
