OECD income inequality increases – Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet

Today earns the richest 10 percent of the population in the OECD 9.5 times that of the poorest ten percent. In the 1980s, the ratio was 7: 1, according to the report.

The income gap varies widely between Member States. In many countries on the continent of Europe and the Nordic countries are the differences least, but still influence the growth adversely, according to the OECD. In Sweden, Finland and Norway, as in the US and the UK, growth is expected to have been one-fifth higher if income inequality increased.

OECD urges to poverty reduction and increased access to education and health care. The authors have found no evidence that redistributive measures, such as taxes and social benefits, hampering economic growth, provided that they are properly designed, directed and applied.
